From the recording The Human Experience
This song is an emotional plea for those who have been unjustly alienated or ostracized simply for being born of a particular race, gender, or sexuality in their human experience. In a climate of devastating hate, many are made to feel "unworthy" to be who they are as human beings, and this song particularly expresses that, but also assures the listener that words and actions motivated by malice are lies and that you are worthy to be precisely who you are. My friend and former student, Taylor Varner joins me in a vulnerable performance of "Unworthy".
Lyrics
You, with perfections beyond my reach
I, marred by flaws I'd wish no one could see
You made me feel as if love was something to earn
I, caught in brokenness, prayed that this season would turn
And I was thinking to myself
Maybe I shouldn't be here
(Because of you)
Caught up in the insincere
Shackled by chains of fear
(Because of you)
Could you show a little mercy?
(Show me, show me, show me)
I've never felt so unworthy
(Unworthy)
You, like an angel so high above
I, like the dust beneath no one could love
You had me fooled, believed you were something to behold
I, in the image of you, could never fit your mold
And I was thinking to myself
Maybe I shouldn't be here
(Because of you)
Caught up in the insincere
Shackled by chains of fear
(Because of you)
Abandoned in the midst of youth
Subjecting ridicule
(Because of you)
Lies made to believe as truth
You really had me fooled
(Because of you)
Said I wasn't worth it
(It was smoke and mirrors)
Seeking truth, unearthed it
(Now you've got to hear us)
Had me thinking to myself
Maybe I shouldn't be here...
(Ah)
Now, I'm thinking to myself
Maybe I should be here
(Because of you)
I was caught up in the insincere
Now it can't be more clear
(Because of you)
How I was made to believe
What you perceived of me
(Because of you)
No longer will I be deceived
I've come to know my peace
(Because of you)
And maybe, just maybe
You were so unworthy
